Metal Security Doors: Steel vs Aluminium and Choosing the Right Solution

Metal security doors are widely used where a building needs more than a conventional entrance or exit door can provide. They can help protect people, property and sensitive areas against forced entry while also contributing to fire safety, durability, acoustic performance and controlled access.

However, not all metal security doors are the same. Steel and aluminium offer different combinations of strength, weight, corrosion resistance, appearance and maintenance, making each material better suited to particular sectors and building types.

Importantly, security should be assessed on the complete doorset—not simply the material. In the UK, LPS 1175, PAS 24 and EN 1627 provides a classification system for burglar-resistant doorsets, with resistance classes from RC1 through RC6. 

Steel Security Doors

Steel is generally the first choice where high physical security and robustness are the priorities.

Steel has a high strength-to-thickness ratio and is well suited to doors that need to withstand repeated heavy use or attempted forced entry. Properly designed and tested steel doors can also be combined with fire-resistance requirements, specialist locking systems and other security features. Another advantage is durability. Steel doors can tolerate demanding environments such as industrial premises, warehouses, plant rooms and service areas. Damaged steel can often be repaired rather than the entire door needing replacement.

The main disadvantage is corrosion. Unprotected steel can rust, particularly where coatings are damaged or where the door is exposed to moisture, salt or aggressive chemicals. Galvanising, powder coating and appropriate paint systems can significantly improve corrosion resistance. In particularly demanding environments, stainless steel may be a better choice. 

Aluminium Security Doors

Aluminium offers a different set of advantages. It is lighter than steel, naturally resistant to rust and well suited to modern glazed entrances and architectural applications.

This makes aluminium particularly attractive where appearance is important. It can be incorporated into slim-profile frames, glazed doors and contemporary façades without creating the heavy industrial appearance sometimes associated with steel security doors.

Aluminium can also be useful where doors need to be opened frequently. Its lower weight can make large or heavily used doors easier to operate, while its resistance to corrosion makes it attractive for humid environments and certain external applications.

That does not mean aluminium is inherently unsuitable for security. Tested aluminium doorsets can achieve recognised security classifications; the appropriate choice depends on the complete construction, including the frame, locks, hinges, glazing, fixings and installation. Fire-performance standards also specifically cover both steel and aluminium framed doorsets.

The key consideration is that aluminium is a softer material than steel, so steel is generally preferred when maximum resistance to physical attack is required.

Which Material Is Best for Different Sectors?

Residential Buildings

For houses, apartments and residential developments, security doors need to balance security, appearance, thermal performance and everyday usability.

Steel is a strong choice where burglary protection is the primary concern. Aluminium can be attractive for apartment entrances, glazed entrances and contemporary residential developments where design and low maintenance are particularly important.

For higher-risk homes, the relevant question is not simply “steel or aluminium?” but which tested resistance class is appropriate. EN 1627 provides the framework for making that assessment. 

Offices and Commercial Buildings

Offices often require a combination of security and aesthetics. Aluminium doors can work particularly well at the main entrance, especially when a glazed, contemporary appearance is required.

Steel is often more appropriate for back-of-house areas, plant rooms, storage rooms, archives and other locations where physical security is more important than appearance.

A building may therefore use both materials: aluminium for public-facing entrances and steel for higher-risk internal areas.

Retail Premises

Retail buildings have a mixture of requirements. Main entrances need to look attractive and withstand frequent use, while stockrooms and secure areas may require significantly greater resistance to forced entry.

Aluminium can be suitable for customer-facing entrances, whereas steel is generally better suited to stockrooms, service entrances and high-security areas.

Industrial Buildings and Warehouses

For industrial facilities, steel is usually the natural choice.

These environments can subject doors to impacts, heavy traffic, dirt and demanding operating conditions. Steel security doors are particularly appropriate for plant rooms, machinery areas, warehouses, workshops and restricted service areas.

Where doors are exposed to moisture or corrosive substances, the specification should include an appropriate protective finish—or stainless steel where conditions warrant it.

Schools and Public Buildings

Schools, colleges, hospitals and public buildings need to consider more than burglary resistance. Fire protection, controlled access, durability, evacuation requirements and high-frequency use can all be important.

Steel is particularly useful for robust internal security doors, fire-rated compartments and plant or service areas. Aluminium can provide a lighter architectural solution for public-facing entrances.

The complete doorset should be specified according to the required performance rather than choosing a material in isolation.

Healthcare

Healthcare buildings can have demanding hygiene, durability and security requirements. Steel, including stainless steel in appropriate environments, can be advantageous because of its robustness and cleanable surfaces.

Security doors may be required around pharmacies, laboratories, plant rooms, records storage and restricted clinical areas, with the specification varying according to the risk.

Data Centres and Critical Infrastructure

Data centres, telecommunications facilities and other critical infrastructure require particularly high levels of physical security.

Here, steel is generally the stronger starting point, particularly for server rooms and restricted technical areas. Security Is More Than the Door Material

One of the most important points when specifying a security door is that a thick steel door does not automatically mean a secure doorset.

The lock, cylinder, hinges, frame, glazing, hardware, fixings and surrounding wall all contribute to the overall result. EN 1627 assesses the burglar resistance of the construction, while related standards cover components such as locks. 

For this reason, buyers should ask for evidence of the tested and certified doorset, rather than relying on descriptions such as “heavy-duty”, “high-security” or “burglar-proof”.

Making the Right Choice

The choice between steel and aluminium ultimately depends on the building and the risks it faces.

Choose steel when:

  • Maximum physical robustness is a priority.

  • The door is protecting a high-risk or restricted area.

  • Heavy-duty industrial use is expected.

  • Fire and security performance are important considerations.

  • The door is being installed in a plant room, warehouse, server room or secure storage area.

Consider aluminium when:

  • A modern architectural appearance is important.

  • The entrance incorporates significant glazing.

  • Lower weight is advantageous.

  • The door will be operated frequently.

  • Corrosion resistance and low maintenance are priorities.

  • The required security level can be achieved by a tested aluminium doorset.

In many commercial projects, the best solution is not to choose one material for the entire building. Aluminium can provide an attractive and practical public entrance, while steel can protect the building’s more vulnerable and restricted areas.

Ultimately, the right security door is the one whose tested performance matches the risk, building regulations and operational requirements of the application. Material is an important part of the specification, but the complete doorset and its installation, is what determines the real level of protection.
